Counting calories is not the only way to lose weight and eating less is not the only way to lose weight. <p>Developing good behaviors that lead to weight loss is just easier if the program followed is pleasant and meets the needs of the dieter. A low carbohydrate eating plan does just that. There are specific rules when it comes to following this method of weight loss and it is important to find a plan that makes these rules clear and understandable.</p>
<p>A low carb menu will include a lot of protein which will provide the satisfaction and energy required to succeed with weight loss. These programs are designed to sustain energy while reducing the calories stored as fat in the body and providing meal enjoyment.</p>
<p>The person losing weight wants to do it easily, with comfort and the knowledge that they have enough nutrition to keep their body and mind functioning well. Adding complex carbohydrates to their diet and avoiding simple carbs allow them to feel the fullness they desire for a longer period of time. This type of dieter needs to distinguish between simple and complex sugars found in food.</p>

<p>To sum up the rules to follow a low carb diet plan, vegetables and fruits which are needed for their nutrients must be limited by their sugar content. Fat and proteins can be completely enjoyed as long as the body does not have much in the way of sugars, although there is such a thing as taking in too much fat. As long as these simple rules and combinations are followed, fat and calories are no longer the enemy.</p>
<p>The most amazing thing happens when following this way of eating and that is a loss of hunger and possibly forgetting to eat. For one who has always had a ravenous appetite, this can be good news. Yet, forgetting to eat may result in hunger sneaking up on a person so that they make the wrong food decision when they finally feel their appetite roar to attention. So, skipping meals is not advised when on this type of program.</p>
<p>Once the body is used to burning fat on a low carb plan, going off plan will cause the body to revert to expecting carbs for energy. That will cause a quick weight gain. It is better to continue the low carb plan until the weight is lost and then slowly move into adding foods back into the diet.</p>

<p>The difference between the Okinawans and the San Blas Islands residents is not genetic or some special medical treatment, it is their diet that keeps them healthier and stronger for far longer than their peers. In the United States, that same benefit is seen in the Seventh Day Adventists who typically eat a vegetarian diet and live, on average, four to seven years longer than those in the same community.</p>
<p>The diets that are most commonly eaten by those who have longer lives are low in saturated fats and high in fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Most of these diets are high in fruits and vegetables, getting the bulk of their protein from vegetarian sources rather than from meats. While there are some healthy, low-fat animal proteins, the typical American diet has far too much emphasis on red meats, which are loaded with saturated fats, cholesterol, and calories which can clog arteries, cause massive weight gain and lead to higher risk for obesity, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and certain cancers.</p>
<p>Some of the foods that are suggested by these so called &#8220;longevity diets&#8221; might be a shock, while others are pretty obvious. Of course, fruits and vegetables of all kinds should be eaten; however, there are other suggestions as well. These include:</p>
<p>Whole grains, especially in place of processed and too easily digested simple carbohydrates. According to studies, you can cut your risk of heart disease in half if you include plenty or whole grains in your diet. Whole grain foods also protect against Type II Diabetes, which also lowers heart disease risk. When choosing your whole grain foods, make sure that you are reading the label carefully. The first ingredient that is listed should be the whole grain. If the first word is &#8220;enriched,&#8221; then it is nothing more than white flour with a little coloring or molasses for flavor and color. The fiber content for these foods should be fairly high as well. A warning about whole grains, especially bread: some of them can have fairly high calorie counts per serving, so again, carefully reading labels and knowing what your personal dietary needs are is the key.</p>
<p>Nuts are a surprising thing to find on a list of the foods that you should be eating, but they are surprisingly beneficial to good overall health, especially the heart. They are high in calories though, so the serving size that you should be consuming is very small, but for every few nuts that you eat, you are getting heart healthy fats and additional fiber. They are also surprisingly high in other nutrients, including Omega-3 Fatty acids, vitamin E, magnesium, protein, fiber, potassium, plant sterols, vitamin B6, and arginine. There are several different types of nuts which have been proven to be very beneficial, including walnuts (the highest in overall antioxidants), almonds (best nut source of vitamin E and containing more protein than a large egg, long considered to be the perfect protein source) and pistachios (highest in dietary fiber per serving and most nuts per one ounce serving size). <p>If you think that you can only have bland and blah foods when you are eating healthy, with no snacks or treats, you are wrong. In fact, dark chocolate has polyphenols which are thought to both lower blood pressure and to improve the flexibility of the blood vessels themselves. A study using dark chocolate and subjects who already had high blood pressure showed an improvement in their blood pressure readings and their insulin sensitivity after only fifteen days of eating dark chocolate every day.</p>
<p>While most fruits and vegetables are suggested by these healthy diets, blueberries may be the king, according to a number of studies. They are high in antioxidants and have been proven to protect against the age-related changes in the brain that can lead to serious memory impairments and dementia. Blueberries are considered to be one of the &#8220;super foods&#8221; and have been listed several times in books and diet plans as such. They are so beneficial that in a book called Super Foods RX, the authors suggest trying to eat as much as one to two cups of these and other members of the family, including grapes, cherries, raspberries, strawberries, blackberries, currants, and other berries on a daily basis. Blueberries and the others in this category can be fresh or frozen. Another benefit of blueberries: they relieve both diarrhea and constipation because they are high in pectin and are also good for urinary tract health (similarly to cranberries). <p>Everyone knows that the Okinawa diet, as well as other heart-healthy diets like the Mediterranean diet, is high in fish, especially fish that are high in Omega-3 fatty acids. These healthy fats protect the heart, including from irregular heart rhythms which can potentially cause heart failure. Fatty acids, including DHA and EPA, in fish oil may also protect against depression and age-related memory loss. ALA, another fatty acid, is found in flaxseed and may also have the same benefit. However, men should only get the marine based Omega-3 fatty acids, because the other sources can lead to an increased risk of developing prostate cancer.</p>
<p>Some of the best fish sources for these fatty acids are salmon, canned albacore tuna, sardines, Alaskan halibut, herring, sea bass, trout, oysters, and clams. The recommendation is to eat fish two to four times a week, however, there are certain groups who may be restricted to how much fish they are eating, especially particular varieties. The concern with some types of fish is the increased level of mercury, which can lead to mercury poisoning.</p>
<p>The debate over coffee has gone back and forth a million times. It is bad for you; it makes you nervous, jumpy or jittery. It is good for you, especially before a workout. The latest information suggests that coffee may protect against both Type 2 diabetes and mental decline associated with age.</p>
<p>Protein is important in the diet as well, especially plant-based protein like soy and soy products. However, Americans are busy people and protein supplements are often the way that they get the bulk of their protein intake. <p>Interestingly enough, medical healing evolved at the clan level. The so-called medicine man was the main healer for each tribe. These have been developed into larger schools of thought through time. Many of these traditional practices have not been studied by Western science. Many medical studies are very expensive to conduct.</p>
<p>The definition of holistic medicine is the foundation for a healing philosophy. This includes many of the traditions associated with the promotion, protection and restoration of health of the body. Many of these practices have developed very sophisticated methods to treat patients. It is quite fascinating to think of how they have accumulated this information through time.</p>
<p>Chiropractic medicine is becoming a mainstream practice. One of the top reported health problems and the United States is back pain. <p>Acupressure uses pressure and movement on the acupoints. Acupuncture requires the use of needles to be placed directly into the acupoints. The acupoints do not have any nerve receptacles and are not painful when a needle is inserted. Acupressure uses specific movements to help stimulate the acupoints.</p>
<p>There is a consolidation and integration of many of these holistic practices into Western medical practices. Western science is realizing that it can only dissect things to a certain level of comprehension. A holistic viewpoint looks at the body as a complete system. This is important to finding the right balance in the medical profession.</p>
<p>The main disadvantage of these holistic practices is simply a lack of medical studies. Most medical studies are funded by companies hoping to profit from a beneficial treatment or drug. There simply isn&#8217;t enough money to validate many of these treatments since there would be no clear owner of the process.</p>
<p>One of the most important validating trends for holistic medical practices is acceptance by the insurance industry. <p>Like so many things in our modern world, its the processing of chocolate that makes all the difference. This isn&#8217;t just the New Age Hippy types saying this either (as one, the author feels comfortable making this statement). The scientists measuring all the chemicals in our food, telling us which bits are good and which are bad are saying it to. It&#8217;s RAW, minimally-processed chocolate that&#8217;s the miracle food. Un-roasted, un-cooked plain old powdered chocolate, better known as &#8216;Cacao&#8217;, is far superior in every way for your health. It&#8217;s called a &#8216;superfood&#8217; by many, as it&#8217;s list of super-good for you super-nutrients is extensive. Note that &#8216;organic&#8217; does not mean &#8216;raw&#8217;. Even the premium organic hot-chocolate powders found in the high-end health food stores is still roasted and usually processed with alkali (called &#8216;Dutch Processing&#8217;, making it easier to dissolve in water, and destroying most of the antioxidants at the same time). This means that 99% of the chocolate products on the shelves are NOT the superfood you wished they were, but it also points the direction to how to include chocolate in your life on an exceptionally health daily basis. We&#8217;ll get to some recipes in a moment, but first a few points to help you remember why raw chocolate is where it&#8217;s at.</p>
<p>Energy and stimulation is at the heart of the chocolate experience, but many people are sensitive to chocolate&#8217;s effects. There are however, significant differences in the alkaloid structures of raw and roasted chocolate. Raw chocolate&#8217;s stimulation comes primarily from theobromine, which has little anxiety producing effects. Studies by natural wellness professionals and user reports both note that while commercially prepared dark chocolate has a very stimulating action that caffeine sensitive individuals may find too strong, an equivalent amount of raw cacao does not. The stimulating effects are reported mild, gentle, and without a &#8216;crash&#8217; that is often associated with caffeine. A reason for mothers to think about creating their own raw chocolate treats for their children, too. The jury is still out on the actual amount if caffeine in raw chocolate; some investigators have found none, some have found small amounts in the &#8216;skin&#8217; of the cacao beans, and others of found only small amounts in beans that have fermented somewhat (an indication of a lower-quality cacao). Either way, if you&#8217;ve refrained from chocolate because of it&#8217;s caffeine content, raw cacao may just be your answer to enjoying this treat again.</p>
<p>Next the question of anti-oxidants. Chocolate has been discovered to have exceptionally high quantities of important polyphenols. A study published in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry was titled: &#8220;Cocoa Has More Phenolic Phytochemicals and Higher Antioxidant Capacity than Teas and Red Wine.&#8221; It&#8217;s hard to argue with that. Here again the question of raw arises: One report notes that while roasted chocolate is made up of five-percent antioxidants, raw chocolate contains twice as much at ten percent. Another important note is the addition of milk to make milk chocolate. Research has shown that the addition of milk actually cancels-out the positive effects of chocolate&#8217;s antioxidants. And milk may be one of the reasons many people seem to be allergic to chocolate, as lactose intolerance is fairly common. Another chocolate myth is some individuals break out when ingesting high amounts; reports indicate that raw chocolate does not cause this response, and that it may be the refined fats and sugars present in most chocolate products producing this effect.</p>
<p>Finally, the question of mood-enhancing neurochemicals and precursors. Chocolate contains significant quantities of the essential amino acid tryptophan. Tryptophan intake has recently been collated with neurogenesis, the development of new brain cells, and both long and short term memory. The presence of tryptophan is critical for the production of serotonin, a primary neurotransmitter associated with mood (Prozac works on the principal of enhancing the action of serotonin). Once in the body tryptophan reacts with vitamins B6 and B3 in the presence of magnesium (all present in raw chocolate) to produce serotonin. Enhanced serotonin function assists in diminishing anxiety and stress &#8211; ccording to Dr. Gabriel Cousens, serotonin is literally our &#8220;stress-defense shield.&#8221; Tryptophan is heat sensitive and is often deficient in many cooked-food diets, even when animal protein intake is high. In addition to tryptophan (but not heat sensitive) chocolate also contains PEA, the &#8216;love hormone&#8217; and Anandamide the &#8216;bliss chemical&#8217;.</p>
<p>Convinced? Ready for a little raw chocolate power? First its critical to find a good source; make sure the chocolate you&#8217;re buying is raw &#8211; it will be most likely labeled &#8216;Cacao&#8217;, the name for the raw chocolate beans and the tree on which they grow. Cacao nibs are small pieces of pure raw chocolate that can be eaten straight, or mixed with other healthy snacks like Gogi berries. But the best-loved raw chocolate preparation is the original chocolate drink: hot chocolate. Now it won&#8217;t be hot enough for long enough to convert any chemicals or to cook the chocolate, just to make it a warm comforting drink &#8211; and of course, heating the water isn&#8217;t necessary at all (though in recipes calling for Coconut oil, it helps to blend the oil into the drink). So to make a cup, use powdered raw chocolate (grinding the nibs or beans in a coffee grinder can work, though you&#8217;ll find this challenging as the natural oils in the chocolate will heat up and liquefy before the grinding is complete, leaving little crunchy bits). Put one or two tablespoons powdered chocolate, 1 to 2 teaspoons raw dark agave nectar (a low-glycemic index natural sweetner) and 1 to 2 teaspoons of Coconut oil in a blender. Add 8 to 12 ounces almost-boiling water and blend for 10 seconds. That&#8217;s it! You&#8217;ll find your personal favorite formula after a few preparations &#8211; more or less chocolate, oil, sweetener or water.</p>
<p>There are many, many recipes available online and in books about raw chocolate. Some favorite additions to the drink are Maca (Peruvian Ginseng), essential oils like Vanilla, Peppermint or Orange (just one drop is often enough) or a little powdered cinnamon. Raw chocolate bars for your family are very easy to make, really just by omitting the water and adjusting the oil and sweetener ratios to make a thick chocolate paste. Add some chopped nuts if you like, press into a casserole dish and put it in the refrigerator long enough to make it firm. Experiment; it&#8217;s chocolate! You&#8217;re supposed to have fun. And with raw chocolate, it might be the most fun you can have eating while positively and naturally benefiting your health.</p>
