Undertakers, also known as Funeral Directors, are experts who manage activities and ceremonies associated with funerals. Mentioned below are some of the important skills and qualifications that undertakers must possess to succeed in their job.
Since an undertaker’s services may be needed at any time of the day, the person entering this profession should be ready to be on call at all hours. This is essentially an outdoors task, which will need him to be away from office for long hours.
An undertaker must be a good communicator and a patient listener. With customers hailing from so many religions, traditions and cultures, he must be able to interact with and handle each one of them successfully. A sensitive and compassionate attitude will be a great help in this job. But he will have to offer support to the bereaved family and should stay strong and emotionally detached so that he can perform his functions well.
Although the job is by nature sombre and serious, the undertakers must bring dignity and serenity to the proceedings instead of more grief or unhappiness through their attitude.
Knowledge of different religious beliefs, practices and sentiments, and profound respect for these helps undertakers find success in their profession. They should also be aware of the funeral rites and customs of burial of different sects.
Good management and the power to organize affairs are important skills for an undertaker. Many services will have to be organized by the undertaker and this will need good communication and management skills from the undertaker.
As the undertaker will be in charge of obtaining all clearances and following all regulations related to the event, he will have to thoroughly know such procedures and legal formalities. He will have to be fully conscious of rules to be followed with respect to obtaining death certificates or claims for insurance.
Finally, he must essentially be able to and be qualified to drive vehicles like hearses and limousines during the funeral ceremony.
